115 / Quit playing politics with people's lives

att: Chris Evans, Immigration Minister
I object to the Government's decision to suspend processing of Afghan and Sri Lankan refugees, I especially object since it seems to be a cynical political move. I believe any persons seeking protection from prosecution in their country should have their applications processed speedily, without delay. I am aware of how difficult the problem is to - on the one hand - stem the flow of boat people who seem to be 'jumping the queue' and - on the other hand - to be compassionate and to be helping people in need. I am also aware of the argument that if people are processed quickly and compassionately, this will encourage both potential asylum-seekers and people smugglers, and potentially increase the boat traffic. But I expect my Government to find solutions that are neither illegal (as this suspension seems to be) nor dispassionate and callous. Australia can and must do better - especially in view of the relatively small numbers involved. One approach to a solution that must be pursued is to engage the Indonesian Government in a dialogue toward resolving the issue of people smuggling apparently not being illegal in Indonesia. This must be coupled with an increased (legal and official) intake of refugees without the people smuggling middlemen. It breaks my heart every time I see news-footage of these people who have no future in their home country and whose life is threatened. Furthermore, I believe that these refugees would be a valuable addition to Australian society - they will be eager to make a new life for themselves and in the process be an advantage to our economy as well as the diversity of our culture. The bottom line is, we must not turn our back on refugees, it is against not only their, but also our interests.

Sincerely, C. Burmeister
