172 / Once more: What are we fighting for in Afghanistan?

An insightful article in the paper today questions our goals in the Afghan war; while the original invasion of Afghanistan probably was legal, with the aim to destroy al-Qaeda and the government supporting it … the objective quickly changed.

The war was extended and escalated, the unwinnable objective became to establish democracy there.
Mistakes of the past (in Vietnam) were repeated, and our opposition party is wanting to add more repeats:
"Give us more troops, we'll change the strategy and win the war." Bull!

One interesting aspect about this article is who's written it (SMH): Malcolm Frazer, former conservative PM; he's come a long way.
