173 / Jon Stewart's guest provides a moral compass

Here's a worthwhile addition to the debate as to whether the church can provide ethics more effectively (and more authoritatively) than secular education.
When Jon Stewart interviewed Sam Harris, author of The Moral Landscape - who postulates in his book science can determine human values better than religion - Harris makes the point that, "the Catholic Church is more concerned about preventing contraception than child abuse; more concerned about preventing gay marriage than genocide …"  'nuff said; except - as my friend points out - how can you accept moral authority from an organization where all you have to do is say a handful of prayers and your sins are forgiven.
I've blogged before on religion and ethics.
