159 / I knew it: God did not create the universe

The great man speaks again, he who does the thinking for us, when we can't push our minds far enough on our own.

I talk, of course, of Stephen Hawking, who's got a new book out … can't wait to get my hands on it (SMH today.) This time the man addresses a question humanity has had a great deal of trouble pushing their collective minds far enough to address: The fact that God did not create the universe.

That's right. God wasn't there when the universe came about, it came into existence due to physical laws such as gravity. In fact, God - as religions see him - does not exists, in as much as he doesn't run our lives and we can't pray to him for favors.

But hang on; says Hawking, "If you like, you can call the laws of science 'God'." Cool. Spot on. Problem solved.

What can I say, this line of reasoning is right down my alley, I've written about it before.
