35 / Do you like to go to the movies?
Well, you better stop reading the paper! Or, more to the point, the inane, idiotic write-ups by movie critics, namely those (but they nearly all do it) who give away details - and in today's case, the main thrust - of the story. Once again it's happened in the Sun Herald, this time with 'Moon'. I was lucky, I saw the movie first (brilliant movie, too.)
Why do I want to know the twist in the story before I go to see it? Why do I want to know that at the end of his movie, 'Milk' gets killed? Why do I want to know that Cate Blanchett's character in 'Babel' will get shot? (I sat there on the edge of my seat waiting, waiting for it to happen … I was sooo pissed off at the movie critic for putting me through it, and for - in fact - spoiling the whole movie experience.)
Here's another example: The review in the newspaper's Guide of the Movie Of The Week (Westworld with Yul Brynner) starts off well, giving a lot of background. Then, for no good reason at all, the critic throws this clanker at the reader: "For Blane and Martin the encounter goes bad … and with Blane dead and Martin fleeing for his life …" Doh, thanks for less than nothing, you moron!
What are these people thinking? I tell you what I think, for all it's worth: They are the laziest journalists around; instead of doing their home-work and giving us relevant info about the background, say how the movie was made, where the story stems from etc., they sink so low to lazily relaying the story.
I despise these people. Shame on you (you know if I'm talking about you!) Unfortunately I get sucked in again and again; I like to know background info about a movie before I see it … JUST NOT THE F****** STORY!
