4 / Open letter to Mac
I have a long-standing gripe with Apple … they don't make the computer I want. Here's an open letter to Mac:
Hi Mac,
I just checked your website again (as I do most days) and while you ask: Which Mac are you? … you are still not making my Mac.
I have been using Macs for 20 years, until 2008 I use a desktop machine in the studio and two 12” PowerBook G4 on location.
I am a commercial photographer, I carry a lot of equipment on location,
I bring two computers with me just like I bring two cameras – I couldn't afford to be stuck with broken-down equipment. Thus I prefer small computers.
I haven't upgraded my PowerBooks for over three years - I didn't want a 15" or 17" machine. I believe my 12" PowerBook is the best design - the keyboard dictates a laptop’s size, the 12" looks neat - as big as necessary, as small as possible. And (unlike moviemakers) photographers shoot also vertical, thus I don’t want a cinema-widescreen - the 12" fits the bill. Back in the studio I also use an external monitor – I mean, that’s how Mac laptops are designed, to be used with an extra monitor, aren’t they?
And while you are busy making my Mac, make me a 512gb (if not 1024gb) ssm Time Capsule and a
Location-Monitor: a hi-res matte screen 20” in a 3x2 format (35mm format – 36mm x 24mm) that I can use horizontally or vertically – 50% of my pictures are vertical (look at a stand-up picture frame, how it can be used upright or sideways), and - importantly -
run it on battery power,
for my location work.
Canon make a camera all photographers need - the EOS 1 Ds - you have the chance to make a Location-Computer/Time-Capsule/Display combo all photographers need; what’s stopping you?
