It is interesting that the United Nations is often referred to as having founded Israel legally, rather than Israel having been brought into existence by 'force of arms', as was alleged in a letter to the newspaper.
However, those who seek to remind us that Israel's existence is legal are (while it is correct) ignoring just how tenuous this point is, since Israel has consistently ignored UN resolutions critical of its treatment of Palestinians. A quick search on the UN website yields many examples - for instance:
"The (UN) Security Council, having learned with deep concern that Israel, the occupying power, in contradiction of its obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, deported … hundreds of Palestinian civilians from the territories occupied by Israel since 1967 … strongly condemns the action taken by Israel … demands that Israel ensure the safe and immediate return to the occupied territories of all those deported …"
